Pick the Right Slitting Blades for Different Slitting Processes
Products are usually manufactured into bulk and large rolls of material in the non-woven, laminates, vinyl, fabric, and film industries.
Since these rolls are too huge to use in the final product, most industry manufacturers convert the material first into smaller rolls through a process known as slitting. During this process, the specific blades used have a significant effect on the product’s final quality.
Common Slitting Blade Types
Crush Cut Blades
Crush cut blades are primarily used for separating non-woven, thick, and tough materials like fabrics, paper, and laminates. While this process is simple and affordable to set up, it typically creates a ragged edge compared to other methods.
During slitting, a pneumatic holder presses the blade into the material against a hardened anvil. When choosing material for these blades, the anvil’s hardness must be considered, as replacing an anvil is more costly than replacing the blade itself.
Razor Slitting Blades
Razor slitting is one of the most economical methods, frequently used for converting ribbons, vinyl, tapes, and films. This method allows for extremely narrow slit widths with very little dust produced, making it one of the cleanest slitting techniques available.
While razor blades are inexpensive and require more frequent replacement, their lifespan can be extended with proper sharpening. It is generally recommended to change all bar-mounted blades simultaneously to maintain consistency.
Shear Slitting Blades
Shear slitting is the preferred choice for applications requiring high precision. Although the setup is more complex and expensive, it is highly effective for layered materials, composites, foils, and heavy films.
This process uses two blades acting like scissors: a "male" slitter on top and a "female" anvil blade on the bottom. Because the process produces minimal heat, it is ideal for high-demand, continuous runtime operations.
